To begin our walk, we'll meet at the main entrance to Yulin Market at the scheduled time, ready to eat our way through one of Chengdu's best-loved neighbourhoods. Ready to taste the city the way people here actually do?

First, we'll go into the market itself. This is a working neighbourhood market, not one built for visitors: baskets of fresh chillies in five shades of red, mounds of Sichuan pepper, tubs of pickled vegetables, tofu made that morning, and vendors who have held the same stall for twenty years. Your guide will walk you through it and explain what everything is, what it goes into, and how a Chengdu household actually shops.

Then we'll start eating. Over the course of the walk your guide will take you to try four or five typical local snacks, bought from the stalls the neighbourhood itself queues at. Among them is guokui, a flatbread baked until crisp and filled with a savoury mixture of meat and vegetables, and the fried potato that Chengdu is well known for.

You'll also try dan hong gao, a small pancake cooked on a round iron griddle and folded over a sweet or savoury filling. It's a Chengdu speciality that is genuinely hard to find elsewhere in China, and watching one being made is half the pleasure. What better way to get to know a city than eating what its own neighbourhood eats?

Finally, we'll finish our walk in the streets around the market, where the everyday life of Chengdu carries on much as it always has. Full, and with a much better idea of how this city eats — the perfect way to end the tour!
