Step into a neighborhood market, explore the ingredients behind Sichuan cuisine, make a traditional egg pancake, and taste local snacks and a small sample of plum wine with a private guide.

  • Explore a real neighborhood market where Chengdu residents shop.
  • Discover Sichuan peppercorns, chilies and traditional seasonings.
  • Learn about Chengdu’s everyday food culture with a private guide.
  • Make your own Chengdu-style egg pancake at a local stall.
  • Sample a small amount of Chinese plum wine if you are over 18.

Meet your English-speaking guide at Nijiaqiao Metro Station and begin with a walk through the surrounding streets before entering a lively local market. This is not a staged tourist market—it is where neighborhood residents shop for vegetables, meat, spices and everyday ingredients.

Explore the market’s different sections and learn how local families select and use fresh produce. See Sichuan peppercorns, dried chilies, chili powders and hotpot seasonings, and discover how different varieties create aroma, heat and the distinctive numbing sensation associated with Sichuan cuisine.

Along the way, sample a few carefully selected flavors. Depending on opening hours and daily availability, you may taste local snacks, seasonal market specialties and a small sample of Chinese plum wine.

The experience also includes a hands-on introduction to dan hong gao, a traditional Chengdu egg pancake. Step behind a neighborhood food stall, learn how the batter is cooked in a small pan and make your own version with guidance from the vendor.

Rather than simply moving between food stops, your guide will explain how markets, small shops and shared meals reflect Chengdu’s relaxed lifestyle and strong neighborhood culture.

At the end of the experience, your guide will take you to a personally recommended shop specializing in tianshui mian, Chengdu’s sweet and spicy noodles. The noodles are not included, so you can decide whether to stay and order independently.

Tastings may vary according to the season, vendor opening hours and what is fresh on the day.
