Come along on a private evening tour of Kuanzhai Alley: dinner at an old-style Sichuan restaurant, then a walk through the three lanes after dark.

We'll meet at the agreed meeting point near Kuanzhai Alley at the scheduled time, then walk to Xuanxuan Xiaoyuan for dinner. Your guide will order for the table and explain each dish.

This restaurant serves old-style Sichuan cooking, the version that existed before chilli took over the region's reputation. Don't miss your chance to try dishes built on stock, garlic and pickled vegetables rather than heat alone.

After dinner, we'll walk into Kuanzhai Alley itself. The three lanes — Wide Alley, Narrow Alley and Well Alley — date back to 1718, when the Qing court built a garrison quarter here for Manchu troops. The area was restored and reopened in 2008, so what you'll see is a rebuilt version of the old street, with the original layout kept.

Your guide will point out the courtyard gates, the stone carvings and the buildings that survived, and explain what the quarter was for. In the evening the lanes fill up with people, and the teahouses and shops stay open late.
