Chengdu Giant Panda Base

Book this guided visit to the Chengdu Giant Panda Base and see the pandas with someone who knows the base ― where to go first, what to skip, and how to avoid spending your morning in queues.
Itinerary
- 1
We'll meet at the entrance to the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, 10 km (6.2 mi) from the city centre. Your guide will have your tickets ready.
- 2
Inside, you'll see the nursery pavilions, the sleeping quarters, and the indoor and outdoor enclosures where the adult pandas live. There are also feeding areas, the veterinary hospital and the research laboratories. The base is home to red pandas as well, which most visitors walk straight past.
- 3
This is where your guide makes the difference. The base covers a large area, and most people start at the nearest enclosure along with everyone else. Your guide will take you the other way, so you reach the pandas while they're still feeding and before the crowds arrive. Along the route, your guide will tell you which enclosures are worth your time that morning and which are not, and explain the rules that matter — no feeding, no flash, no shouting at the glass.
- 4
The base has a museum with interactive displays on panda genetics, reproduction and conservation, and a dome cinema showing documentaries. Did you know the base opened in 1987 with six rescued pandas? Today it cares for more than 200.
- 5
Come early. Pandas feed in the morning and sleep through the afternoon, so mornings are when you'll see them climbing, eating and playing. Your guide will also tell you where the pandas cannot be touched or held, and why: those programmes ended at Chinese panda facilities on conservation and safety grounds.
- 6
After the base, we'll sit down for a foot bath and massage, the way people in Chengdu end a long day. Your feet go into hot herbal water, and a therapist works through the pressure points in your feet, shoulders and back. It's an ordinary part of life here, and it's exactly what you'll want after a morning of walking.
- 7
A visit here is not only about seeing the animals. It's a chance to understand how this species is bred, studied and kept alive — and to spend the rest of the day the way Chengdu does.
