The main sculpture of West Lake Cultural Square is located at the center of the square and is one of the most important public art landmarks in northern Hangzhou. Inspired by Hangzhou's history and culture, the sculpture integrates elements such as the Qiantang River tide, West Lake landscapes, and Liangzhu jade, with a majestic design that embodies Hangzhou's spirit of embracing tradition while pioneering the future. The sculpture stands approximately 20 meters tall, using a combination of stainless steel and stone materials that shine brilliantly in the sunlight. A circular walkway and leisure seats surround the sculpture, making it a popular gathering place for citizens to walk, dance, and relax. At night, the sculpture appears even more spectacular under lighting, complementing the illuminated facades of the surrounding Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Museum, Zhejiang Natural History Museum, and Zhejiang Provincial Museum. During festivals such as Lantern Festival and National Day, themed flower displays and light shows are arranged around the sculpture, attracting numerous citizens and visitors.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are now at the north entrance of West Lake Cultural Square. It is marked by a spacious urban plaza and neatly arranged landscape lamp columns. The central axis runs straight south to the main plaza, offering clear sightlines and serving as the first stop into this modern urban cultural landmark. Looking into the distance, you can see the Global Center tower and surrounding museum buildings complementing each other, blending modernity with cultural depth. I suggest pausing here to take a wide-angle panoramic photo of the square; at dusk, when the lights come on, the entrance columns and building silhouettes form a beautiful urban skyline.

he heart of West Lake Cultural Square

主广场与音乐喷泉

The West Lake Cultural Square Music Fountain is located in the water pool area south of the main sculpture at the center of the square, and is one of the most popular night scenes in northern Hangzhou. The fountain performance combines background music with water column variations, with water patterns rising and falling with the melody, and the highest water column reaching up to 30 meters. The lighting system uses multi-color LEDs that can display various color changes including red, blue, green, and purple, complementing the architectural lighting of the surrounding Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Museum and Zhejiang Natural History Museum, creating a brilliant urban nightscape. Performance repertoire includes Chinese and international classic pieces, such as "Butterfly Lovers" and "Jasmine Flower" as well as Western classical music segments. A different piece is played on the hour. A circular viewing platform and leisure seats surround the fountain pool, making it a popular gathering spot for citizens to cool off in summer. The best viewing positions are the south side steps of the square and areas around the main sculpture. It gets crowded on weekends and holidays; arriving 15 minutes early is recommended.

We are now at the heart of West Lake Cultural Square — the Main Plaza and Musical Fountain. This expansive open space is the core area for locals to stroll and visitors to gather. The central musical fountain surges and falls with the rhythm of the music, creating layered water curtains of varying heights. By day the fountain is fresh and lively; by night it becomes even more visually striking with colored lights. Walk around the fountain pool to find different angles for photos; use a slow shutter to capture silky water effects. If you catch the fountain show on the hour or during holidays, stop and enjoy this symphony of water and light.

Zhejiang Natural History Museum (Hangzhou Branch)

浙江自然博物院(杭州馆)

The Zhejiang Natural History Museum (Hangzhou Branch) is located on the west side of West Lake Cultural Square, with a construction area of approximately 26,000 square meters, and is one of the three major provincial-level cultural venues on the square. The museum features permanent exhibitions including the Story of Earth Life, the Rich and Bizarre World of Living Things, Green Zhejiang, and the Wild Places — Kenneth Behring World Wildlife Exhibition, with a collection of over 200,000 specimens. The most striking exhibit is the massive Mamenchisaurus fossil skeleton standing in the central hall, one of Hangzhou's most recognizable natural science symbols. The Biological World exhibition hall on the second floor displays rare animal specimens from around the world, including Siberian tigers, golden snub-nosed monkeys, African elephants, and penguins, all exquisitely mounted. The Green Zhejiang hall on the third floor uses immersive scenes to recreate Zhejiang's forest, wetland, and marine ecosystems. The museum also has a 4D science cinema and interactive exploration area, ideal for families.

Next we come to Zhejiang Museum of Natural History, themed on "Nature, Life and Humanity." Through numerous paleontological fossils, animal and plant specimens, and ecological dioramas, the museum tells the story of life's evolution from ancient oceans to modern land. Dinosaur skeletons, rare birds, and exhibitions on Zhejiang's local ecology are the highlights — especially suitable for children. The exhibition halls have soft lighting; use a macro or standard lens to capture specimen details, but please turn off your flash to protect the exhibits.

Zhejiang Provincial Museum (Wulin Branch)

浙江省博物馆(武林馆区)

The Wulin Branch of Zhejiang Provincial Museum is located on the south side of West Lake Cultural Square, facing the main sculpture across the square, with a construction area of approximately 20,000 square meters. The museum's permanent exhibitions include "Zhejiang Historical and Cultural Exhibition," "Highlights of Celadon — Special Exhibition of Ancient Zhejiang Celadon," and "Painting and Calligraphy Masterpieces from the Collection," systematically presenting the development of Zhejiang's history and culture from prehistoric times to modern times. Famous exhibits include Hemudu culture pottery, Liangzhu culture jade artifacts, Song Dynasty Longquan celadon, the remaining section of Huang Gongwang's "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains" (on display during special periods), and Zhejiang school paintings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Although smaller than the Zhijiang Branch, the Wulin Branch is centrally located with convenient transportation, making it an important venue for citizens to visit cultural and museum exhibitions. The museum also has a temporary exhibition hall that regularly hosts high-level cultural relic and art exhibitions from China and abroad.

Passing through the main plaza, we arrive at Zhejiang Provincial Museum. This museum houses a rich collection of Yue-region artifacts and systematically traces Zhejiang's history from the Neolithic age to modern times. Highlights include proto-porcelain, Yue kiln celadon, Liangzhu jade, Southern Song calligraphy and painting, and precious objects from the Wuyue Kingdom period. I recommend focusing on the celadon and painting galleries, which best reflect Zhejiang's deep heritage as the home of porcelain and a land of literary brilliance. The permanent exhibitions are free but require advance reservation; foreign visitors should carry their passports.

Zhejiang Science and Technology Museum

浙江省科技馆

The Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Museum is located on the east side of West Lake Cultural Square, with a construction area of approximately 30,000 square meters, making it the largest science education base in Zhejiang Province. Global Center

环球中心

The Canal Soul Sculpture Group is located on the west bank of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal on the east side of West Lake Cultural Square, forming the core of the square's riverside landscape belt. With the cultural connotation of the canal as its theme, the sculpture group uses a combination of abstract and realistic techniques to depict scenes such as trackers pulling boats, merchants coming and going, and boats shuttling back and forth, vividly recreating the prosperous scene of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal as the major north-south transportation artery in ancient times. The sculpture group extends along the river bank for about 100 meters, made of bronze and stone, and has been well preserved through the years. The waterside platform extends about 5 meters into the canal with safety railings, where visitors can get close to the canal water and watch boats passing by and historic buildings on the opposite bank. Willow trees and peach trees are planted around the platform; the scene is especially beautiful in spring when the peach blossoms bloom. This is an excellent spot for photographing canal sunsets.

Stepping out of the science museum, please look up at the Global Center on the west side of the square. This high-rise stands with a clean, modern glass-curtain-wall design and is one of the key landmarks in downtown Hangzhou, serving as a visual anchor of the skyline around West Lake Cultural Square. While the building is primarily used for offices, viewing it from the plaza or photographing its reflection conveys the vibrant energy of modern Hangzhou. At dusk, the glass facade catches the afterglow of the sunset, making it a prime moment for urban photography.

Canal Landscape Belt

运河景观带

The West Lake Cultural Square Underground Commercial Street is located on the B1 level beneath the square, seamlessly connected to the West Lake Cultural Square Station of Metro Line 1 and 3, and was one of the first metro-above commercial projects in Hangzhou. The commercial street extends about 300 meters, connecting the underground entrances of the metro station hall, Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Museum, Zhejiang Natural History Museum, and Zhejiang Provincial Museum Wulin Branch, allowing visitors to move between venues without going above ground. The street brings together various dining brands, coffee shops, convenience stores, bookstores, and cultural creative product shops, making it a popular choice for citizens to rest and dine while visiting the museums. Featured shops include Hangzhou local snack brands, canal-themed cultural creative shops, and children's toy stores. The commercial street operates in sync with the metro, warm in winter and cool in summer. A small activity stage in the center of the commercial street regularly hosts cultural performances, public welfare exhibitions, and interactive experience activities.

Walking east along the square, we reach the Canal Landscape Belt. Adjacent to the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal, its waterfront promenades are shaded by trees, while ancient bridges, stone railings, and gently flowing canal water create a harmonious scene. The canal was the most important north-south water transport route in ancient China, with a history stretching back more than two thousand years. Slow down here to feel Hangzhou's character as a city shaped by water; photographing the reflections of ancient bridges or the night views along the bank is highly recommended.

Sculpture Group in Cultural Square

文化广场雕塑群

West Lake Cultural Square is one of the core venues for large-scale lantern festivals held annually during the Qixi Festival (the seventh day of the seventh lunar month) in Hangzhou. The lantern festival usually lasts 7-10 days, with the entire square decorated as a lantern world themed on the love story of "The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl." Large themed lantern installations are set up around the main sculpture, a romantic light corridor is arranged along the canal, and fluorescent Qixi patterns are embedded on the square ground, creating a dreamy and beautiful festival atmosphere. During the lantern festival, supporting activities include matchmaking events, love song concerts, Hanfu parades, and floating river lanterns, making it an annual grand event for singles and couples in Hangzhou. In addition to the Qixi Lantern Festival, the square also features themed lantern decorations and flower displays during Lantern Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day; the Lantern Festival scale is second only to West Lake scenic area. The square's open space and complete supporting facilities make it one of the ideal venues for festival events in Hangzhou.

In different corners of the square stand several groups of modern public art sculptures. Their themes are diverse, ranging from Zhejiang historical figures to natural ecology and urban spirit. They are not only public art that enlivens the space but also popular backdrops for visitor photos. I suggest slowing down to appreciate them, and try composing shots with a sculpture in the foreground and museum buildings or the Global Center in the background for a striking urban feel.

Sunken Plaza

下沉式广场

The West Lake Cultural Square Urban Viewing Platform is located on a high terrace at the northwest corner of the square, south of North Huancheng Road, and is a lesser-known urban viewing spot in northern Hangzhou. The platform is about 3 meters above the square ground, with wooden railings and leisure seats, offering an open view of Wulin Square, Hangzhou Tower, high-rise office buildings around West Lake Cultural Square, and the distant Precious Stone Hill and Baochu Pagoda. At dusk, the sunset glow falls on the city buildings, creating excellent lighting effects, making it a favorite shooting spot for photography enthusiasts. Tall trees are planted around the platform, providing good shade in summer. Compared with famous urban viewing spots, there are fewer tourists here, with a quieter and more leisurely atmosphere. The platform is connected to the main square area by a gentle slope walkway with barrier-free access. Public toilets and drinking water stations are available nearby.

At this point in the tour, feel free to take a break in the sunken plaza. It connects metro entrances and exits with the surrounding commercial spaces, gathering dining, retail, and convenience services, making it a handy place to recharge and pick up souvenirs. I suggest finding a seat by the window or near the water, ordering a cup of tea, and watching the flow of people across the square to get a feel for the everyday rhythm of Hangzhou life.

Night Light Show

夜景灯光秀

The West Lake Cultural Square Ginkgo Avenue refers to the ginkgo tree array planted along the square's perimeter, along North Zhongshan Road and North Huancheng Road, with a total of about 200 ginkgo trees, most over 20 years old, with thick trunks and dense crowns. Every year from mid-to-late November to early December, the ginkgo leaves turn from green to yellow, and the entire avenue resembles a golden corridor, forming a sharp contrast with the modern architectural complex of the square, making it one of the most popular free autumn viewing spots in Hangzhou. The best shooting time is 9-10 am when the sunlight hits at an angle, with golden leaves appearing translucent and dazzling in the sun, creating a highly layered composition with the square's main sculpture and provincial cultural venue buildings as background. During autumn weekends, the avenue gathers numerous photography enthusiasts, Hanfu enthusiasts, and wedding photographers. The ginkgo leaf falling period is mid-to-late December, when the fallen leaves covering the ground create an equally beautiful scene.

As night falls, West Lake Cultural Square takes on another captivating face. The surrounding buildings, central musical fountain, and landscape lights together form a brilliant nightscape, while the regular light show integrates modern lighting and music to showcase the vitality and romance of Hangzhou's urban night. I recommend finding a slightly elevated spot near the fountain or along the canal bank for night photography; use a tripod and long exposure to capture the dazzling trails of passing traffic and the glow of the buildings.
