Suzhou pre-trip checklist
What's different about Suzhou: weather, must-book sights, local apps and getting in from the airport.
Use together with the General Pre-Trip Checklist; this only lists Suzhou-specific items, and does not repeat general items.
Climate and Clothing — Suzhou has a Jiangnan climate: mild, humid, and often rainy. Spring (March-May) is mild and rainy, and the best time for gardens, so bring light rain gear. The plum rain season (roughly mid-June to early July) is overcast, rainy, and damp, so bring an umbrella and non-slip waterproof shoes. Summer (July-August) is muggy and humid, so prevent heatstroke, use sunscreen, and wear light breathable clothes. Autumn (September-November) is cool and pleasant, with sweet osmanthus in the air, and is the best season. Winter (December-February) is damp, cold, and overcast, and feels colder than the temperature suggests, so bring a warm windproof coat.
Arrival and Getting into the City — Suzhou has no major civil aviation airport: most travelers fly into Shanghai Hongqiao/Pudong or Wuxi Sunan Shuofang International Airport (SUW, the closest to Suzhou), then transfer by high-speed rail or intercity rail. High-speed rail is the most convenient option; Shanghai to Suzhou takes about 25-40 minutes to Suzhou Railway Station or Suzhou North Railway Station. Book high-speed rail tickets in advance (12306/Trip.com), and it pairs well with a Shanghai trip.
Getting Around the City — The metro covers the main city and the industrial park area, with English signs. The old town, Pingjiang Road, Shantang Street, and similar areas are mainly for walking, so bring comfortable walking shoes.
Garden Reservations and Tickets — Suzhou's gardens are spread out, and many require reservations or tickets: Humble Administrator's Garden, Lingering Garden, Master of the Nets Garden, Lion Grove Garden, Suzhou Museum (designed by Ieoh Ming Pei and very popular), and others. Holidays fill up easily, so book in advance through official mini programs and bring your passport. There are many gardens, so plan 2-3 per day and leave time to slow down and enjoy them; Suzhou's essence is in the word "slow."
Suzhou-Specific Tips — Ancient water towns (Tongli/Zhouzhuang) have stone-paved lanes that get slippery in the rain, so bring rain gear. Suzhou-style food tends to be sweet; if you are worried about that, say "bu yao tai tian," meaning "not too sweet."
